BRING YOUR WOODEN FURNITURE BACK TO LIFE WITH THESE CLEANING TIPS
We’ve all heard the term ‘elbow grease’ – but where did it originate?.
Those with a sense of humour may say that it has its roots in Ancient ‘Grease’ ....but for the purists, it was used as a ‘derisory term for sweat’ as recorded in a dictionary dating back to the mid 1600s. And the meaning of the phrase has remained relative unchanged over the centuries – with the Oxford Dictionary today classifiying it as ‘hard physical work, especially vigorous polishing or cleaning’. Hardly surprising then that elbow grease has been described as the best brand of furniture polish around !.
Whilst not everyone has the time or the inclination to spruce up their wooden furniture using a bit of tried and tested elbow grease, it’s amazing what a little bit of TLC can do for treasured pieces, says one of the experts in furniture wax in Perth, Gilly Stephenson. It’s a fact of life that timber furniture can take a beating, but it’s a bit like having an extra member of the family...it does need some looking after in order for it to remain healthy and looking good. And while a bit of rubbing and effort is required, the first step is to make sure you’re putting the right stuff onto it, Stephenson says.
It’s important to use quality, natural products like beeswax or carnauba wax. Always steer clear of anything containing silicon, turpentine or petrochemical byproducts as these may damage the wooden furniture. Many commercially produced wood polishes and cleaners do contain additives, so be sure to read the labels before applying. Different types of timber also need different types of products, so you may want to talk to a professional wood repairer to find out what type of cleaner or cream polish you should be using.
The following is just a snapshot of some of the different uses for waxes and polishes which will reveal just how many options there are. But this shouldn’t overwhelm you...it should inspire you!
· To clean dull old polish and repolish – Use a polish reviver and then a cream polish.
· To achieve a natural finish on raw or stripped wood – Apply several coats of restoring polish and new timber polish, then at least two coats of cabinet makers’ wax and finish with cream polish.
· To maintain a satin finish on furniture – Use orange or lemon oil.
And with all these cream polish solutions, a little elbow grease in the form of rubbing, buffing or just gentle rubbing with a soft, lint-free cloth is all that’s required to bring your wooden furniture back to life.
