The increasing appeal of LED lightbars by Gautam Punjabi
Because of the cost effectiveness and brightness of LED lights, LED lightbars are used more and more in all sorts of applications. Designs and patterns of LED lightbars are also increasing proportionately, to cater to widening user requirements.
Ever since LED lightbars came into use in emergency vehicles and other lighting applications, it had to put up with very little competition. Because of the brightness of the lights, long life of the bulb, and low energy consumption, it was the popular choice of many departments and individuals. And manufacturers are making so many modifications in them that LED lightbars are steadily gaining in popularity.
An attractive recent modification in LED lightbars is its auto-dimming ability. The light bars, which have this property, will be fitted with a sensor that can respond to the differing light conditions in the surroundings, and raise or lower the light output accordingly. The 12 LED lights unit shines quite brightly in the sunlight, in snow, and also when it is against reflective backgrounds. But at night when the surroundings become dark, it dims automatically. These LED lightbars have been used in trailer refrigeration systems and requires much less power than normal light bars. It is designed to be attached to the front side of the trailer.
There are infrared LED lightbars, which can emit an infra red beam of 900' in length. The light sports a tough design, which allows it to withstand heavy rains, winds, sands, and waves. It can be submerged in water up to 3' feet for a short while, and can also withstand fairly high temperature variations. Since the light can function with a power source supplying 9 to 32 volts of power, it can be mounted on any land vehicle or boat or other equipment easily. These LED lightbars are extremely useful in rescue operations and during bad weather conditions. Since the light is infra red, night vision goggles are necessary to use the light.
The mounts available for LED lightbars are also undergoing a lot of modifications, enabling the lights to be used better. Many smaller LED lightbars for emergency vehicle use come with two magnetic bases and a cord that can be plugged into a cigarette adapter. Each magnetic base will give the light bar a grip of about 100 pounds and with the added protection provided by the shock absorbers, the beam is kept steady even when there is vibrations on the surface where it is mounted.
This type of magnetic mounts allows easy shifting of the light bar from one part of the vehicle to another part. The magnetically mounted LED lightbars are also provided with riser brackets using which the light can be tilted down or up to project the beam in the required direction.
Besides these, there are also lots of LED lightbars in developmental stages which when completed can be of enormous help because of the various light spectrums they emit, and its energy saving efficiencies. A technology is on the anvil where each LED light can be combined with an individual reflector. By using the right material for the reflector, and by adjusting the reflector angle, a high width spot beam can be produced by this method. If it succeeds there could be many more modifications in LED lightbars.
