State of Rhode Island Hands Out Over $1 Million Grants by State Grant
The last week or so has provided ample proof that applying for a government grant is not like playing the lottery. In fact, there have been a number of businesses that have recently been awarded with government grants, and they didn't even have to ask good old Uncle Sam for it.
State grants are a part of President Obama's Economy Stimulus Package, empowering each of our nation's 50 States with millions in order to help boost local economy. But this funding is not always given to small business startups, or company's looking to expand in their business. Companies looking at "going green" have been very successful at landing their desired grants. In fact, the State Economic Development Corporation has been very kind to four specific Rhode Island companies in the last week, all of which have been rewarded for their environmental efforts.
Holliston Sand
This company, formerly of New England, now resides in Slatersville, RI and is most famous for its long history of producing products for various sporting turfs. If you've recently watched the Red Sox play at Fenway Park, chances are you took a good look at some of Holliston's finest product. These industry leaders were awarded with a $400,000 grant that will be used to convert 60 percent of the manufacturer's energy into hydropower. Holliston plans to build two 180-kilowatt hydropower turbines at two different dam locations on their property.
Tomorrow Biofuels
Located in Cranston, RI, this green company is well known for "creating green house gases into biofuel dollars," according to the website. Tomorrow Biofuels was awarded with a $250,000 grant, funding that will be used to continue development of an algae fueled energy system that runs solely on seaweed. What they do is amazing: they use greenhouse gases to produce algae feed, the algae is then grown and converted into biofuel, and most impressive of all, the biofuel will be used to power a 300-kilowat generator that will be looped into the electric grid.
Hodges Badge Company Inc.
This industry leader specializes in manufacturing custom ribbons, medals, sashes and rosettes out of Portsmouth, RI. Their products are featured in events such as equestrian, dog shows, athletic events and school functions. Hodges was recently awarded with a $225,000 grant, which they will use to install a 225-watt wing turbine on its property. The goal is to offset the manufacturer's electricity needs and to become more reliant on an alternative energy solution: wind power.
SGE Engineers
According to their website, this "global engineering and construction program management firm" hails from Portsmouth, RI, specializing in developing public and private infrastructure in North America. With the $400,000 grant that they recently received, SGE will be building a 100-kilowatt wind turbine at the Easton Pond Business Center in Middleton, RI. With the help of the wind turbine, SGE is anticipating the energy output to produce up to 80 percent of the facility's power, providing cheaper power for the building's tenants.
