Which material?
The theme/colour scheme for my wedding is going to be red and white - all decorations etc.
For the cenrepieces at the reception I was planning on having a small dish or bowl filled with those gem things, then add water and have petals and a floating candle. Alternating colours for each table (white gems, red petals, white candle for every other table and then red gems, white petals and red candle on the rest).

I'm with everyone else. Definitely use real. I opened up one of those boxes of fabric petals at the craft store & they were awful. There were threads hanging off the edges & they were dull looking. I could've done better with a sheet. Anyway, it shouldn't be difficult for someone to pick up a few roses for you that day and scatter them in the bowls. You can get a lot of petals from one rose. I used to do that all the time just at my house with candles.
